چکیده

The search for gravitational radiation remains one of the most challenging problems faced by experimental physicists at this present time. One of the most significant limits to the sensitivity of current and planned long-baseline gravitational wave detectors is thermal displacement noise in their test masses and suspensions. Future detectors with higher sensitivities will require optics with both reduced thermal noise and the capability of handling increased levels of laser power. The thermomechanical properties of silicon both at room and low temperatures make it of significant interest as a possible material for mirror substrates and suspension elements. The mechanical dissipation in a 91μm thick <110> single-crystal silicon cantilever has been observed over the temperature range 85 K to 300 K, with dissipations approaching levels down to φ = 4.4×10.

Introduction to LIGO and an Experiment Regarding the Quality Factor of Crystalline Silicon

Third generation LIGO detectors will be limited by thermal noise at a low frequency band where gravitational wave signals are expected to exist. A large contribution to thermal noise is caused by internal friction of the mirror and suspension elements. In order to meet the quantum mechanical sensitivity limits of the detector, it will be necessary to further push down the contribution of therma...

Micro-Raman Measurement of Bending Stresses in Micromachined Silicon Flexures

Micron-scale characterization of mechanical stresses is essential for the successful design and operation of many micromachined devices. Here we report the use of Raman spectroscopy to measure the bending stresses in deep reactive-ion etched silicon flexures with a stress resolution of 10 MPa and spatial resolution of 1 m. The accuracy of the technique, as assessed by comparison to analytical a...

Mechanical tuning of two-dimensional photonic crystal cavity by micro Electro mechanical flexures

A nano-displacement sensing method for micro-opto-electro-mechanical-systems (MOEMS) is proposed. The method is based on a square attice photonic crystal (PC) made of dielectric silicon posts, mounted on a micro mechanical flexure. The flexure is fixed at one end and is free to ove at the other, to enable elastic deformations that, by being transferred to the photonic crystal array, modify its ...

Fabrication Processes for Magnetic Microactuators with Polysilicon Flexures

Electroplated magnetic films have been integrated with silicon-based surface micromachining to fabricate magnetically actuated microflexure structures. Both the “frame-plating” technique and also a less complex onemask plating process have been used to electrodeposit NiFe onto polysilicon flexures coated with Cr-Cu seed layers. The microactuators are released by removing the underlying sacrific...
